In 1967, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that youth have a right to an attorney in juvenile proceedings. In 2019, the Utah legislator passed S.B. 32, which guaranteed all children be provided a juvenile defense attorney at all stages of their delinquency case. Each Utah county is responsible with providing youth a defense attorney. Representation starts with detention hearings, continuing though post-disposition hearings, and even includes potential appeals.
